John Mayer, M.D. begins his 15th year providing volunteer orthopaedic care for patients served by HealthReach clinic in Waukegan. Healthreach is a clinic staffed entirely by volunteer physicians that provides free medical care for the working poor in Lake County – many of whom would fall through the cracks with inadequate health benefits or without employer-provided health insurance.

Hany Elrashidy, M.D. is invited to instruct at this year's AANA (Arthroscopy Association of North America) : Fundamentals of Arthroscopy Resident course in Rosemont, IL. He joined several other sports-trained Orthopedic surgeons in instructing Orthopedic surgery residents from around the country on Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee. This included a 3 day hands on lab as well as several lectures on advances in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, and meniscal repair

Castle Connolly assembled the list of recognized physicians by soliciting nominations from physicians in academic medical centers, specialty hospitals, regional hospitals and physician practices.

Serving as a lab instructor for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association's Annual Residents Course, Dr. Gregory Caronis helped to instruct orthopaedic residents in fracture care. He also attended the annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association to learn the latest techniques in fracture care and minimally-invasive surgery.

Hany Elrashidy, M.D. joined Selina Carpenter, PA-C and Greenleaf staff and physical therapists in Grayslake for the annual Wellness Festival. Numerous runners and triathletes visited Greenleaf's booth to pick up educational materials and to ask questions about prevention of running-related injuries.

The Greenleaf family proudly welcomes Hany Elrashidy, M.D., our new sports medicine specialist. Dr. Elrashidy completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, followed by a Sports medicine and Arthroscopy fellowship with San Diego Knee and Sports Medicine. Dr. Elrashidy brings his state-of-the-art training in minimally invasive shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle replacement surgery including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder joint replacement and cartilage grafting and regeneration in the knee.

Dr. Elrashidy and associates from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago are published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), one of the world's leading academic Orthopedic journals. In September's issue, he discusses his research and the success of cartilage transplant in severe ankle injuries and cartilage damage.

Gregory Caronis, M.D. and John Mayer, M.D. and their families joined nearly 1,000 other runners for Libertyville's Twilight Shuffle. A sponsor of this large community event for the past four years, Greenleaf's orthopaedic and physical therapy staff staffed a public education table, providing race participants with educational materials and counseling on prevention and treatment of common running injuries. It was particularly gratifying to see so many former patients enjoying the event.

Thomas Baier, M.D., Roger Collins, M.D. and Gregory Caronis, M.D. joined area high school football teams in serving as volunteer team physicians. The Greenleaf physicians provide sideline evaluation of injuries, helping to ensure that the young athletes are competing safely and that injuries receive immediate and appropriate care.

Greenleaf teamed with the Village of Mundelein to sponsor the Distance Classic, a 5K that kicked off the town's July 4th celebration. Gregory Caronis, M.D. and his family joined nearly 400 runners on a winding course through the Village of Mundelein that ended at the booths where Greenleaf provided public education materials and tips on prevention of running injuries to race participants.

Dr. Gregory Caronis and Dr. Roger Collins attended the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons course entitled "Strategies and Tactics in Orthopaedic Extremity Trauma." This course was designed to provide surgeons with state-of-the-art treatment strategies for addressing traumatic injuries like those treated by Greenleaf surgeons at Advocate Condell's Level 1 trauma center.

Greenleaf Orthopaedic's subspecialist in foot and ankle surgery, Dr. Gregory Caronis, attended Wright Medical's course entitled "Advances in Foot and Ankle Surgery - Cutting Edge Techniques in Arthroplasty, Reconstruction and Surgical Management." This course helped update Dr. Caronis on advances in ankle reconstruction and other foot and ankle conditions that he commonly treats in his practice.

Dr. Gregory Caronis received his recertification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons after completing a rigorous board exam designed to ensure that orthopaedic surgeons are current with the standards and recent advances in orthopaedic surgery. The recertification exam in required every 10 years for board-certified orthopaedic surgeons.

"Preventing Spring Sports Injuries in Children " will be the title of an evening discussion presented by Dr. Gregory Caronis on May 12 at Condell's conference center (7-8 p.m.). Dr. Caronis will discuss pediatric sports injuries that are occurring more frequently as young athletes train more intensely at an earlier age.

Dr. Gregory Caronis will take a 3-week sabbatical from practice to complete an AO Trauma Fracture Preceptorship at Region's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. While there, Dr. Caronis will work with Dr. Peter Cole, an orthopaedic trauma specialist, to further hone his experience with the latest trauma management techniques. Dr. Caronis hopes to bring his fracture expertise and orthopaedic trauma management skills to Lake County as Condell embarks on its Level 1 trauma status.

Advocate Condell Medical Center received State of Illinois designation as a Level 1 Trauma Center. This means that Condell will be caring for the most critically injured patients in Lake County and Southern Wisconsin - many of whom will suffer from orthopaedic trauma. Dr. Gregory Caronis will be on trauma call for Greenleaf Orthopaedics as well as work in his capacity as chairman of orthopaedics at Condell to coordinate the overall orthopaedic trauma response.

Summer 2009
Greenleaf Orthopaedic Associates joined with local communities in celebrating summer and sponsoring 10K and 5K races in Grayslake, Gurnee and Libertyville. In addition to talking with race participants about orthopaedic concerns at our sponsor booth, Dr. Gregory Caronis joined with over 800 other runners in Libertyville's second annual Twilight Shuffle. It was particularly gratifying to be running with some former patients!

Gregory Caronis, M.D. participated in an advanced orthopaedic trauma course entitled "Minimally Invasive Osteosynthesis." One of the key principles of fracture fixation is the care of soft tissues and the preservation of the blood supply. The evolution of "traditional" principles and techniques to incorporate the new concept of minimally invasive surgery reflects the ongoing emphasis of this important principle. Dr. Caronis operated in cadaver lab during this meeting to refine his surgical skills with these minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Caronis is proud to bring these methods to Lake County.

John G. Mayer M.D. and Gregory G. Caronis, MD attended the 2009 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons meeting February 25-28th in Las Vegas. The focus of Dr. Mayer's attention at the meetings was in his specialty of Total Joint Replacement of the Hip and Knee. Of particular interest at this year’s meeting were new studies on Hip Surface Replacement in comparison to Total Hip Replacement with similar head and socket designs.

Dr. Caronis' main clinical interests were foot and ankle reconstruction in athletes and fracture care.

Gregory Caronis, M.D. was featured in the Pioneer Press, a Sun Times News publication, in an article entitled "Love It or Shovel It." Dr. Caronis' column provides tips on safely weathering and enjoying winter. "A Midwest winter may be the season that tries the spirit and strains the back, but it can also be a time of enjoyment of crisp, fresh air and some of nature's most pure and spectacular displays. With some precautions and prevention, we can all safely make our way toward spring." This October, Gregory Caronis, M.D. will be speaking to seniors in Grayslake and Lake Forest in conjunction with Lake Forest Hospital's "Lunch and Learn" program. Dr. Caronis' presentation, "Osteoporosis and Fracture Prevention" will focus on the significant problem of osteoporosis-related fractures in the elderly and what seniors can do to preserve and protect their bone health. Seniors can still register with Lake Forest Hospital for the October 14 and 21 presentations.

Thomas Baier, M.D. is continuing to serve with the U.S. Army in Iraq where he is expected to be deployed until the beginning of November. Dr. Baier is using his skills and experience to care for soldiers suffering from a variety of conditions, ranging from explosive injuries to ailments suffered from long hours of training and work. He is currently the only Army orthopaedic surgeon in northern Iraq. While Dr. Baier's patients continue to be cared for by his partners, Greenleaf Orthopaedics and Baier patients anxiously await his safe return.

Greenleaf Orthopaedics joined with the Gurnee Park District August 9 in sponsoring the Gurnee Days 10K Race. Over 300 runners, joggers and walkers participated, making it the largest race ever for Gurnee Days. It was particularly rewarding to see some former patients out running!

In his new leadership capacity, Dr. Caronis will work with hospital administration and staff physicians to ensure that highest quality orthopaedic services are readily available to the residents of Lake County and surrounding areas.

Dr. Gregory Caronis recently attended the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s trauma course held in Rosemont Illinois on December 6-8, 2007. Through lectures, case discussions, and practical hands-on cadaver labs, Dr. Caronis honed his skills for treating routine and high energy complex fractures using new and innovative techniques as well as tried and true methods. He also learned to compare and contrast various surgical treatment options for various and complex fractures, as well as locked and non-locked plating techniques. It also included discussions regarding complications associated with high energy trauma and how to avoid them.

Dr. Thomas Baier, in a desire to support our military and our country, recently received his commission to serve in the US Army Reserves. He will serve as an orthopaedic surgeon and will attend basic training in the follow with potential deployment next year. He will be deployed 3-4 months at a time and continue his regular practice at Greenleaf Orthopaedics when home. Dr Baier was interviewed by CBS 2 Chicago. In an always continuing effort to bring the latest in orthopaedic trauma care to Lake County, Illinois, Gregory Caronis, MD, Thomas Baier, MD, Roger Collins, MD, and Selina Carpenter, PA-C attended the Chicago Trauma Symposium held at the Palmer House in Chicago from August 10th-12th, 2007, The purpose of this course is to provide a basis for recognition and modern management of complex trauma and musculoskeletal injuries. The course was an intensive three days of sessions with a series of lectures which include twelve specialized hands-on workshops. The course objectives were designed to offer the Greenleaf doctors an integrated approach to trauma management. Topics covered included:

  1. Techniques of long bone stabilization, including intramedullary nailing, external fixation and plating.
  2. Indications and complications associated with the use of pelvic external fixation.
  3. Current concepts in the initial management of pelvic and acetabular fractures.
  4. Management of upper extremity trauma.
  5. Current methods for the management of foot and ankle trauma.
  6. Treatment options for management of complex lower extremity injuries.
  7. The use of locked-plating techniques and image-guided surgery.

John G. Mayer, MD was featured in Condell Medical Center's MedStaff News Publication as one of six Chicago area orthopedic surgeons specializing in total joint replacement who was invited to Boston for a Round Table discussion with the designers of the Johnson & Johnson knee system. Design features and principles were discussed, as well as surgical techniques, complex knee joint replacements and clinical results.

From April 27-29, 2006, Dr. Caronis attended the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Advanced Foot and Ankle Course in Atlanta, Georgia. This advanced sympsium in foot and ankle surgery is designed for the orthopaedic surgeon who regularly treats difficult foot and ankle problems. The world renowned faculty presented discussions and cases of common problems related to orthopaedic fractures, sports injuries and reconstruction procedures for diabetes and arthritis, providing insight into the complexity and management of these problems.

John G. Mayer, MD has been certified in computer assisted surgery for total knee replacement. This is now available at Lake Forest Hospital. The role of the computer and its overall benefits and results are still not clear or proven. However, in some situations the computer can be helpful to guide alignment decisions and reinforce the surgeon’s judgment during surgery.

From October 28th through October 30th 2005, Dr. Gregory Caronis, MD and Roger Collins, MD attended the 7th Annual, "Occupational Orthopaedic & Workers Compensation: A Multidisciplinary Perspective," meeting. Sponsored by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, this valuable symposium covered wide ranging topics affecting the injured worker, including:

  • Evaluation of patients with musculoskeletal pain associated with the workplace and formulation of treatment plans with appropriate return to work guides
  • Comparing and contrasting surgical and nonsurgical treatment protocols for workplace injuries
  • Discussion of alternative treatment, rehabilitation techniques, and outcomes for work related injuries
  • Understanding how to avoid unnecessary disability
  • Gaining familiarity with impairment evaluations and reports
  • Improvement of report writing and development of new skills in office management for work-related-injuries
  • Understanding how to use the science to support return-to-work
Improved understanding of the injured worker will help the doctors at Greenleaf Orthopedic associates continue to provide excellence in care to their injured patients in Gurnee, Libertyville, and all of Lake County, Illinois.

Among the most challenging problems in the field of orthopedics is the treatment of ankle arthritis. It affects many people of all ages, and leads to problems including pain and limited activities. In a continuing and never ending effort to provide for the orthopaedic needs of patients in Gurnee, Libertyville, and all of Lake County, Illinois, Dr. Gregory Caronis attended the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons sponsored course, "Evolving Techniques and Gold Standard Procedures for Ankle Arthritis." Held from September 30th, 2005 through October 2nd, 2005 in Rosemont, Illinois, it covered diverse topics including non operative, conservative treatment of ankle arthritis with bracing and orthotic devices. It also covered the latest and current standard of care treatments of ankle arthritis including ankle arthroscopy, ankle replacement, and ankle fusion.

In the most recent issue of Condell Medical Center's, "House Calls," newsletter, Dr. John Mayer was featured. In this article, Dr. Mayer, an expert in joint replacement surgery, discussed causes of knee arthritis and reasons to undergo knee replacement surgery. This article discussed options in surgery, "mini-incision," surgery and post operative rehabilitation. In addition the website of Greenleaf Orthopaedic Associates was featured as a top website for patients interested in getting more detailed information on their orthopaedic problems. This article mentioned that Greenleaf's website was, "chosen by eHealthcare Strategy and Trends," newsletter as a top website in the April, 2005 issue."

Gregory Caronis, MD, Thomas Baier, MD, and Selina Carpenter, PA-C were recent attendees of the, "7th Annual Chicago Trauma Symposium," held in Chicago, Illinois from August 11th through the 14th, 2005. This four day course reviewed the most current standards of care and latest treatments for injuries involving the musculoskeletal system. Their participation assures Lake County, Illinois residents will have close to home access to the latest treatment options for their bone and joint injuries for years to come.

In an ongoing effort to bring the latest orthopaedic treatments to Lake County, Illinois, Dr. Gregory Caronis, MD, Dr. Thomas Baier, MD, and Caroline Peterson, PA-C, were attendees of a meeting in Rosemont, Illinois, "Treatment Options for Difficult Fractures: A New Technology Symposium." This conference took place on May 7th. It provided our practitioners the opportunity to gain insight and improve their surgical skills in applying the latest techniques in treating broken bones. Topics included using advanced locking plate technology in the surgical care of elbow and wrist fractures. The most current information on bone grafting and bone graft substitutes was also discussed.
